Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to rewrite Nigeria’s political history by portraying himself as a champion of democracy. Lamido alleged that contrary to Tinubu’s current narrative surrounding the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election annulment, Tinubu had actually supported the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida at the time.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV, Lamido said Tinubu was part of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) faction that sided with Babangida when the regime nullified the election widely regarded as free and fair, and presumably won by Moshood Abiola. Lamido claimed Tinubu’s alignment with the pro-annulment camp was based on ethnic and political calculations.
He further challenged Tinubu’s democratic credentials, arguing that many of those now claiming to be heroes of democracy were silent or complicit during key moments of national struggle. Lamido urged Nigerians, especially the younger generation, to critically examine historical records rather than accept political revisions at face value.
