The Presidency has strongly criticized Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent comments on the continued detention of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu. In response, the Presidency accused Obi of playing politics with national security and failing to acknowledge the gravity of the charges against Kanu, which include terrorism and incitement.
Obi had called for a political solution to Kanu’s prolonged incarceration, suggesting that continued detention without resolution could worsen tensions in the South-East. However, the Presidency dismissed his appeal, warning that his position might embolden those threatening the unity of Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has once again demanded the immediate release of Kanu. The group stressed that his freedom is essential for peace and stability in the region.
