Saudi Arabian authorities have barred Nigerian Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi from participating in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, citing his political views as the reason for the exclusion. Despite initially receiving a Hajj visa, Sheikh Gumi announced on Facebook that the Saudi authorities revoked his permission due to discomfort with his perspectives on global politics.
In response, Sheikh Gumi stated he would perform his religious obligations from home, referencing Quranic verse 2:196, which allows for a substitute sacrifice when a pilgrim is prevented from completing Hajj. He also mentioned that Nigerian officials have pledged to engage with Saudi counterparts to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of freedom and democracy.
This incident is not the first time Sheikh Gumi has faced challenges with Saudi authorities. Over a decade ago, he was detained in Saudi Arabia for more than six months due to alleged connections with Farouk Abdulmutallab, known as the “Underwear Bomber.” Sheikh Gumi is known for advocating dialogue with armed groups in Northern Nigeria, a stance that has drawn both support and criticism.
The Saudi government’s decision to bar Sheikh Gumi from the 2025 Hajj underscores the complexities of international religious participation and the influence of political views on such engagements.
