President Bola Tinubu has canceled the customary nationwide broadcast traditionally held on June 12 to mark Democracy Day. Instead, he will deliver his address during a special joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, as confirmed by Segun Imohiosen, the presidency’s Information and Public Relations Director .
Originally scheduled for a 7 a.m. national broadcast and a military parade, both events are now scrapped. The cancellation aligns with Tinubu’s attendance at the legislative assembly. Other Democracy Day activities—including a public lecture—will proceed as planned, with the lecture scheduled for 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre .
This year marks the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999, with the theme: “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.” Tinubu’s Assembly address is expected to highlight ongoing reforms, national unity, and the shared responsibility of citizens and institutions in sustaining democracy .
