The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State are embroiled in a fierce dispute following claims that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa rerouted local government funds meant for grassroots development. The SDP argues that this is a serious violation of fiscal federalism and local autonomy, accusing the governor of stripping rural areas of critical resources and undermining democratic principles.
SDP State Chairman Gbenga Akinbuli condemned the alleged fund diversion as “unconscionable,” asserting it erodes public trust and stalls progress in local communities. He called for transparency and urged the state government to halt the practice, insisting that council allocations should go directly to local governments. Akinbuli stressed that withholding these funds amounts to a betrayal of citizens and a failure of governance.
In response, the APC dismissed the accusations as “baseless” fabrications, accusing the SDP of seeking attention amid its internal leadership and corruption issues. Party spokesperson Steve Otaloro defended Aiyedatiwa’s record, emphasizing that the governor has maintained a strong commitment to democratic governance and operational council leadership, even without elections. Otaloro highlighted the administration’s “Our Ease” policy, which he said has empowered local councils to deliver tangible results to residents.
Reiterating his stance, Governor Aiyedatiwa previously assured residents that federal allocations for local governments remain untouched and are fully transferred. Speaking at a traditional ruler’s palace in Ondo East LGA last year, he emphasized his respect for local government autonomy, stating, “What belongs to them is going to them,” even involving traditional institutions in monitoring fund usage.
