Retired police officers across Nigeria took to the streets in coordinated nationwide protests, demanding their removal from the contributory pension scheme. The aggrieved retirees decried what they described as years of suffering under the scheme, which they claim has failed to provide them with adequate and timely benefits.
In response to the demonstrations, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, assured the protesting ex-officers that the force is actively working with relevant authorities to address their grievances. He acknowledged their concerns as genuine and emphasized that efforts are underway to find a lasting solution.
The retirees, many of whom served the country for decades, insist that the contributory pension scheme is unsuitable for the police and are pushing for a return to the defined benefits system. They argue that many of their colleagues have died in poverty due to delayed or insufficient pension payouts.
As the protests continue to gain momentum across different states, stakeholders are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further discontent among retired security personnel and ensure justice for those who served the nation diligently.
