The Nigerian Police have detained the wife and children of late Bamidele Akingboye, a former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State, over suspicions surrounding his sudden death.
Akingboye, aged 60, was found lifeless last week at his residence in Victoria Garden City, Lagos. While earlier reports suggested natural causes, disturbing images showing bruises and severe cuts on his body sparked public speculation of foul play.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that his wife, four children, and some domestic workers are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Unverified accounts claim that Akingboye may have been pushed from a balcony during a heated domestic dispute. Some reports have also linked one of his wives to the alleged incident, though police have stated that investigations are still ongoing to establish the facts.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos has reportedly ordered a forensic examination and thorough crime scene analysis to determine the exact cause of death. Civil society groups and political observers have called for full transparency to ensure that justice is served without interference.
Until his death, Akingboye was a prominent SDP chieftain and contested the November 2024 Ondo governorship election, making him a notable figure in the state’s political landscape.
