In a devastating attack that marred New Year’s Eve celebrations, suspected terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the Ipele Divisional Police Headquarters in Ipele, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The incident occurred at about 9:41 p.m. on December 31, 2025, when a group of between 20 and 30 armed men stormed the largely peaceful agrarian community, firing assault rifles and using dynamite to target the police facility.
Witnesses described scenes of terror as gunshots echoed through the streets and residents scrambled for safety. The attackers reportedly set the police station ablaze, resulting in the complete destruction of the building and several exhibits housed within the compound. As the assault unfolded, both security personnel on duty and civilians fled into nearby bushes to escape the violence.
The Ondo State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal, condemned the attack in strong terms, labeling it a tragic violation of peace and security in the state. In an official statement, police spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh clarified that no church or religious centre was targeted during the incident, countering rumors that had circulated on social media.
Fortunately, initial reports indicate that no casualties were recorded during the assault, although the emotional toll on the community has been significant. Security agencies, including the police, military, and other response units, were deployed swiftly to restore order following the attack. Additional tactical teams, explosive ordnance disposal units, and Police Mobile Force personnel have been sent to reinforce security in the area, and a coordinated manhunt for the perpetrators is ongoing.
