The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has been accused by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents the Edo North Senatorial District, of neglecting important federal highways in Edo and Delta States. Oshiomhole claims that there is an uneven allocation of road building projects around the nation. During the Senate plenary, he voiced his concerns over the two states’ major roadways’ declining conditions.
Oshiomhole contended that even though the Federal Government has approved a number of major road projects around the country, the federal roads that connect Benin City to Warri, Asaba, Auchi, and Okene are still in terrible shape, making it impossible for businesses and drivers to traverse. He questioned why, in spite of several requests to the Ministry of Works, vital road corridors in Edo and Delta had been neglected.
The former governor of Edo State also claimed that for the previous three years, federal budget allocations for road projects impacting the two states had been consistently withheld.He claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s order allowing the use of tax credits to repair a portion of the damaged road network was the sole meaningful intervention.
Therefore, he insisted that every region should have fair access to high-quality infrastructure and encouraged the Senate to persuade the Minister of Works to take a more national and balanced approach to road development.
In order to increase mobility, commerce, and economic activity throughout Edo, Delta, and the larger South-South region, stakeholders have called for the expeditious repair of critical federal roadways, which has sparked fresh conversations about infrastructure funding and project distribution.
