New worries about cybersecurity in Nigeria’s banking industry have been raised by Zenith Bank Plc’s confirmation that hackers had unauthorized access to a small amount of client data during a cyberattack.Customers’ phone numbers and email addresses were among the exposed data, according to a Tuesday, August 4, 2026, email from the bank informing them of the breach.According to Zenith Bank, the event was a component of a larger worldwide hack that targeted businesses in a variety of industries. The bank further stated that while investigations are underway, its cybersecurity and incident-response procedures were triggered as soon as the intrusion was discovered.
However, the bank reminded consumers that its banking services and digital platforms remain secure and fully operating. There is also no indication that customers’ passwords, Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or funds were compromised.Zenith warned clients to remain watchful against fraudulent emails, text messages and phone calls, reminding them not to give their passwords, PINs, OTPs or other security credentials.The event emphasizes the growing threat of cybercrime and the necessity for improved protection of customers’ sensitive information.
