Otti Cheers ‘Courageous’ Tinubu Move: Fuel Subsidy Removal Was Long Overdue

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has applauded President Bola Tinubu’s “bold and necessary” decision to end the fuel subsidy, stating it was a measure that should have been taken much earlier . Speaking during a visit from former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and ex-Senator Chris Adighije, Otti revealed that his support for the policy dates back to his past writings in ThisDay newspaper — even during the COVID-19 pandemic, he argued that subsidy removal was essential when buyers began rejecting crude oil imports .

He emphasized that long-standing irresponsibility in maintaining the subsidy meant the correction would be “tough, difficult and painful,” but insisted it’s a necessary step for economic reform and urged Nigerians to stay hopeful . Otti also jokingly rebuked politicians already campaigning for 2027, saying planning that far ahead “plays God,” and urged focus on present challenges rather than speculations.
