The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has issued a powerful call to action for all Commissioners of Women Affairs nationwide, encouraging them to transform their ministries into proactive, cohesive, and results-driven institutions vital for social and national development .
Delivering her remarks during the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (GEWE) Coordination Mechanism and Institutional Strengthening Meeting in Abuja, the Minister emphasized the critical need for evidence-based strategies and stronger zonal cooperation. She highlighted that fostering institutional unity and effectiveness is key to stimulating economic advancement and safeguarding national stability .
Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim stressed, “Women Affairs Ministries must move from being reactive to being solutions-oriented. We must collaborate and build systems that are impactful and sustainable,” urging a forward-thinking and collaborative approach .
The meeting also provided a platform for state commissioners to present research outcomes, advocacy tools, and updates on the Special Bill Act, reinforcing the country’s commitment to coordinated efforts on gender equality and women’s empowerment .
In a nod to exemplary leadership, the Minister applauded Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on the appointment of Dr. Seun Osamaye as Commissioner for Women Affairs. She urged the new commissioner to champion the governor’s agenda and underscore the link between strong institutional frameworks and enhanced women’s welfare .
In addition, a collaborative effort between GEWE, UN Women, government entities, civil society, academia, and the media saw the launch of GEWE working tools. These resources are designed to support state-level coordination, reporting, and execution of gender-focused policies .
This event marked a decisive step in Nigeria’s journey toward ensuring that gender equality and women’s empowerment are not just slogans, but tangible, structured, and unified commitments across all states.
