The Nigerian government has dismissed a viral online video claiming Nigerians in Iran are in peril, confirming instead that all citizens in the country are safe and unharmed. This update was issued by the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran on Friday, June 27, 2025 .
NiDCOM chair, Abike Dabiri‑Erewa, reaffirmed the government’s unyielding dedication to the welfare of its citizens abroad, especially in conflict zones. She commended the embassy’s swift and strategic response, which included a temporary relocation of consular services to Armenia to ensure continuous assistance .
As a precaution, Nigerians in Iran were instructed to relocate to safer northern regions—Shomal, Qom, and Ghaemshahr—designated as muster points for potential evacuations. Officials confirmed that these measures have been effective, and no casualties or injuries have been reported .
Regarding the viral video, the embassy clarified that the individual featured had a past conviction for human trafficking and was involved in drug-related offenses. Though he was originally under a deportation order, he was released on humanitarian grounds and had remained in Iran until tensions escalated .
Finally, the government urged all Nigerians abroad to register with their nearest embassy to ensure reliable communication and rapid support in emergency situations—advice underscored by recent developments in Iran following airstrikes and retaliatory missile exchanges since June 13 .
