Speaking at the South‑South zonal public hearing in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio emphasized that the exercise is not just ceremonial, but a vital democratic ritual—a platform for citizens, not just politicians, to shape the nation’s destiny .
He affirmed that constitutional amendment is a strength, not a sign of weakness: an opportunity to realign the nation’s foundational charter with evolving aspirations and realities. In his words, democracy and its guiding document are works in progress; amendments reflect commitment to the future, not disavowal of the past . The public hearings, conducted across all five geopolitical zones, embody the Senate’s belief that genuine national progress stems from dialogue and inclusive engagement, not silence or single narratives .
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, represented by Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi, described the hearings as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey. He pointed out that proposed amendments across thirteen thematic areas—ranging from state restructuring to gender parity and local government autonomy—could serve as catalysts for a revitalized federal structure .
At the South‑East hearing in Enugu, stakeholders demanded the rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones, as well as guaranteed legislative seats for women. They also called for genuine autonomy for local governments to strengthen inclusivity and foster unity .
Similarly, leaders in the South‑West region pressed for the creation of six new states and Lagos State renewed calls to officially recognize its 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). Lawmakers also advocated for legislative reform to reintroduce state police, enshrine the role of traditional institutions, and devolve powers more decisively to sub-national governments .
