The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its intention to appeal the recent judgment that acquitted former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of N2.2 billion fraud charges. The commission expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict delivered by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Lagos, who ruled in Fayose’s favour on charges related to money laundering and corruption during his tenure.
In an official statement, the EFCC emphasized that it will exhaust all legal avenues to ensure justice is served. The anti-graft agency maintained that it has a strong case against the former governor and believes the appellate court will take a different stance based on the evidence presented.
Fayose, who was first arraigned in 2018 alongside a company, Spotless Limited, had faced multiple charges including criminal breach of trust, stealing, and receiving illegal funds. The ruling has stirred mixed reactions, with the EFCC insisting that the fight against corruption must remain relentless and credible, regardless of the personalities involved.
