For the smooth adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and compressed natural gas (CNG) cars throughout Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is establishing a safety, regulatory, and enforcement framework.
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal, made this statement at the NASIU’s third Nigeria Auto Industry Summit.Osundu Ohaeri, the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), made this information available to reporters in Abuja on Thursday.According to Mr. Ohaeri, the summit was held in Lagos on Thursday and was organized by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and the Nigeria Auto Journalist Association (NAJA).
“The summit had as theme “Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Future: The EV and CNG Journey Under the Bola Tinubu Administration”.
Delivered a paper titled “The Safety of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicles on Nigerian Roads”, Mohammed said that the framework was a reaffirmation of the corps commitment to the successful implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA).
Additionally, he said that Tinubu’s audacious energy and transportation reforms have put Nigeria in a position to adopt safer, more affordable, and cleaner mobility.He continued by saying that the reforms have increased environmental sustainability, decreased reliance on fossil fuels, and boosted economic growth.
He emphasized that a strong road safety ecosystem supported by efficient legislation, technical standards, public education, and emergency readiness is essential to the initiative’s success.The corps marshal clarified that by tightening vehicle inspection procedures for CNG-powered and modified cars, the FRSC has strategically matched its operations with the Federal Government’s clean energy transportation program.
“This enhances emergency response capabilities, improves crash reporting through the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS), and intensifies nationwide public enlightenment campaigns on the safe use of emerging vehicle technologies.
These measures are designed to build public confidence while ensuring that the transition to cleaner energy does not compromise road safety,” he said.
He claims that FRSC is actively working with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the NADDC, and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG).Additionally, the corps works with the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), and other important partners.
“These partnerships will aid in developing a comprehensive framework for the safe deployment of Electric and CNG vehicles nationwide.”
The National Gas Vehicle Management System (NGVMS) operationalization, the creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), coordinated inspections, and emergency response protocols were all included in the collaboration, according to the head of FRSC.
He added that the collaborations include ongoing public awareness campaigns, organized data exchange, and specific EV/CNG license plates.He described the features of the FRSC Mobile Application, which was created to assist drivers in navigating Nigeria’s new transportation system.The corps marshal disclosed that the FRSC was assisting Abuja’s EV pilot program while collaborating with pertinent parties to guarantee that all factory-built and converted CNG vehicles adhere to safety regulations.
