Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, has started distributing sensitive electoral materials to Osun State’s thirty local government areas.Kunle Ajayi, the INEC National Commissioner in charge of the Osun election, revealed this on Friday, stating that the process was being conducted at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) facility in Osogbo, the state capital.Ajayi clarified that the distribution was postponed due to the delayed arrival of freshly printed ballots and other election-related materials from Abuja. The Social Democratic Party, or SDP, was just added to the list of parties running in the election, which caused the delay.
The SDP candidate Francis Ajala and his running mate Faseke Oladipo were put to the ballot by the commission on Wednesday. With their participation, there are now 15 political parties running in the election on August 15.
After the event, INEC was forced to rewrite the election results sheets and duplicate the ballot papers to include the SDP candidate.In order to guaranty that the materials reached their intended locations before to Saturday’s voting, the commission stated that they were being distributed as soon as they became available.As part of the commission’s last preparations for the election, the sensitive materials will be transferred from the CBN facility to the proper locations, and the distribution is anticipated to cover all 30 local government areas.
In spite of the changes to the ballot and the consequent necessity to duplicate some of the voting materials, INEC had previously promised stakeholders that the poll would go forward as planned.
