Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has referred to the late Chief Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State and eminent mathematician, as a devoted Nigerian who advocated for justice, peace, and the advancement of the nation until his final days.
In response to the news of Olunloyo's passing on Sunday, Obasanjo remarked that Olunloyo was among the distinguished Nigerians who possessed a profound sense of patriotism.
Through a statement from his media assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former president expressed concern over the diminishing number of national leaders, especially at this critical juncture when their wisdom and experience are urgently required.
"It is disheartening and alarming because we have recently lost Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Edwin Clark, and now Dr. Olunloyo within a span of weeks. The decrease in our nation's leadership due to the loss of dedicated and capable patriots, who have served in various capacities, is concerning, particularly during this vital period in our nation's history when their wise guidance and extensive experience are sorely missed."
Obasanjo extended his condolences to Oyo State Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde, the government, and the citizens of the state, comforting them with the knowledge that Dr. Olunloyo led a life that is deserving of communal admiration, having made a significant impact on his community, and he will be mourned by all.
"We pray that the Almighty grants Dr. Olunloyo's soul eternal peace and provides his family with the strength to endure this tremendous loss."
The late Olunloyo was appointed as a Commissioner in the old Western Region at the young age of 27 and later served as the Governor of Oyo State from October 1, 1983, until December 31, 1983, when the military government led by General Muhammadu Buhari overthrew the Second Republic's democracy.
