Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido recently honored highlife legend Bright Chimezie in Lagos, marking a heartfelt cross-generational celebration of Nigerian music heritage.
The tribute stemmed from Davido’s latest single, “With You” featuring Omah Lay, which samples Chimezie’s 2018 classic “Because of English.” Recognizing the influence of Chimezie’s Zigima sound—a fusion of traditional Igbo highlife and funk—Davido reached out to express his admiration and invited the veteran artist to Lagos.
Upon Chimezie’s arrival, Davido warmly welcomed him, hosting the legend at a five-star hotel. The two shared joyful moments, including a video call with Davido’s uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and his wife Chioma, who expressed their appreciation for Chimezie’s musical legacy.
Chimezie, visibly touched by the gesture, praised “With You” as a “beautiful piece of work,” highlighting the mutual respect between the two artists. This meeting not only bridged musical generations but also underscored the enduring impact of Chimezie’s contributions to Nigerian music.
