NBA Labels Compulsory Voting Bill as Unconstitutional

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has criticized the compulsory voting bill being reviewed by the House of Representatives, calling it both unconstitutional and oppressive.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by NBA President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), the association argued that citizens should not face penalties for opting not to vote.

The proposed amendment to the Electoral Act 2022 would mandate all eligible Nigerian voters to participate in elections.

Originally introduced in February by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the bill was brought forward for its second reading last week by co-sponsor Daniel Asama.
