Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, emphasized the untapped potential of Nigeria’s northern region as pivotal for the nation’s transformation. Speaking at the National Political Consultative Group (North) meeting in Abuja, he highlighted the region’s vast agricultural resources and the pressing need to address poverty and insecurity through strategic investments.
Obi pointed out that the North, with its extensive arable land, could surpass oil in revenue generation if properly harnessed. He compared Nigeria’s rice production to that of Bangladesh, noting that despite Bangladesh’s smaller size, it produces significantly more rice, underscoring the North’s underutilized agricultural capacity.
He stressed that poverty alleviation is crucial for enhancing security, as impoverished communities are more susceptible to unrest. Investing in education, especially for out-of-school children like the Almajiri, is vital. Obi advocated for bringing education directly to these children, recognizing their inherent brilliance and potential.
