The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled its national convention for August 28–30, 2025, in Kano, aiming to revitalize its leadership and strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections. This decision follows the party’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on May 27, 2025, in Abuja. During the meeting, the PDP expressed strong criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of incompetence, harmful economic policies, and a drift towards authoritarianism.
The PDP highlighted escalating insecurity, including widespread killings, kidnappings, and terrorist activities, attributing these issues to the government’s failure to protect citizens. Economically, the party condemned the administration’s policies, such as fuel price hikes, increased electricity tariffs, and multiple taxes, which they claim have led to business closures, job losses, and heightened poverty levels.
Furthermore, the PDP accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fostering corruption and financial mismanagement, citing policy inconsistencies and budgetary issues that have deterred foreign investment and led to infrastructure decay. The party also alleged attempts by the APC to suppress opposition voices and move towards a one-party state.
To address internal challenges and prepare for future elections, the PDP’s NEC ratified the formation of the National Convention Committee and the Zoning Committee. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State will chair the National Convention Committee, with Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun and Peter Mbah of Enugu serving as Vice Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
The party emphasized the importance of unity and adherence to democratic principles as it seeks to reposition itself as a viable alternative to the current administration.
