Killings: Prepare to declare State of emergency in Ondo —PDP tells Tinubu, tackles Aiyedatiwa

Be Attentive to Your Responsibilities: PDP Urges Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa

The Peoples Democratic Party Ondo State Chapter is deeply concerned by the ongoing murders of defenseless citizens in the State, whose only crime is engaging in their daily routines necessary to provide for their families.

The Party struggles to understand how such attackers can operate without facing any opposition for months, in a State where it is claimed that a legitimate government is present. Governor Aiyedatiwa has clearly failed in his constitutional obligation as stated in Section 14(2) b of the 1999 constitution as amended, as he can no longer guarantee the safety and protection of the lives and properties of the people of Ondo State.

It is devastating to acknowledge that in less than a month, approximately fifty individuals have been brutally killed in various communities throughout the State. Regrettably, there have been no arrests or prosecutions made in this period, nor has there been any action taken against the rampaging armed herdsmen who previously wreaked havoc. Consequently, the PDP is left questioning whether there is an operational government in Ondo State given these unprovoked and unchecked murders.

Our Party has received information suggesting that the evident inaction of the State Governor may be linked to an unholy alliance and dubious support he sought from influential figures within the All Progressive Congress (APC) during his bid for the party’s gubernatorial nomination last year.

We have reason to suspect that Governor Aiyedatiwa is restrained and incapacitated because many of these brutal murders are allegedly carried out by criminals from the geopolitical zone and ethnic group of his benefactors.

The Peoples Democratic Party Ondo State Chapter condemns this tragic situation and earnestly urges the State Governor to stop politicizing the lives and wellbeing of innocent residents whom he vowed to safeguard.

These killings are excessive and reflect a prevailing atmosphere of helplessness, despair, and significant compromise among those in positions of power in Ondo State.

Through this statement, the Party is also drawing the attention of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to these barbaric and unjust killings and the evident inability of the State Government to address the escalating crisis.

The urgent attention of Mr. President, given the current situation, is to prepare him to potentially consider instituting a state of emergency regarding insecurity in Ondo State if the State government persists in showing an inability to cease the senseless killings before the State, and indeed the entire Southwest, becomes a slaughterhouse for the ongoing bloodshed of innocent lives.
