Police Bolster Security in Owo Following Church Attack Amid Bandit Threat
In response to escalating threats from bandits and the recent attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, the Nigerian Police have deployed a tactical team to the area. This move aims to enhance security and prevent further violence in the region.
The Inspector-General of Police has ordered specialized operatives, including units from the Explosive Ordnance Devices-Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Explosives (EOD-CBRNE), to conduct comprehensive investigations and intercept the perpetrators.
Preliminary findings indicate that the attackers used firearms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during the assault. Recovered evidence includes expended AK-47 ammunition and fragments of IEDs, with three unexploded devices found at the scene.
The assailants reportedly fled in a stolen Nissan Sunny vehicle, which has since been recovered. The vehicle’s owner is assisting police with ongoing investigations.
The Ondo State security network, Amotekun Corps, has also arrested several suspects linked to the attack and recovered weapons and equipment used by the terrorists.
The federal government has attributed the attack to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), though some officials, including Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, have cautioned against premature conclusions without thorough investigations.
This deployment underscores the authorities’ commitment to restoring peace and security in Owo and its environs.
