In a significant development within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, His Royal Majesty, Oba Olu Falae, has been appointed as the Chairman of its National Executive Committee (NEC). This decision was made during the group’s monthly general meeting held at the Akure residence of its National Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. The meeting saw attendance from notable figures, including former Ondo State Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Chief Kole Omololu, and Chief Tokunbo Ajasin.
Announcing the appointment, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, stated that Pa Fasoranti approved Oba Falae’s new role, entrusting him with the responsibility of implementing reforms aimed at unifying the group and advancing the interests of the Yoruba people.
Oba Falae, who also serves as the Olu of Ilu-Abo in Akure North, expressed his commitment to fostering unity within Afenifere and defending the Yoruba race.
The meeting also addressed national concerns, with Afenifere urging President Bola Tinubu to tackle the escalating issues of kidnapping and killings in various parts of Nigeria. The group emphasized the need for economic policies that positively impact the populace and called for the urgent reconstruction of the deteriorating Ibadan-Ilesa road, labeling it a “death trap.”
This leadership change comes amidst internal disputes within Afenifere, particularly following the appointment of Oba Oladipo Olaitan as a factional leader by the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s supporters. The UK and US chapters of Afenifere have rejected Olaitan’s appointment, reaffirming Pa Reuben Fasoranti as the organization’s authentic leader .
Oba Falae’s new role is seen as a strategic move to consolidate leadership and steer Afenifere towards a more unified and effective advocacy for the Yoruba people.
