The Nigerian Army has confirmed that approximately 300 armed bandits launched a coordinated assault in the Kwanar Dutse Forest, located in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, on June 24, 2025. Acting on credible intelligence, troops from the Nigerian Army, supported by the Air Force, engaged the attackers in a fierce three-hour firefight, successfully halting their advance towards Kwatankoro Forest—where they allegedly intended to regroup or strike nearby villages.
Despite the concerted counter-offensive, the Army suffered 17 fatalities and 10 injuries. The wounded are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility and are reported to be in stable condition. In remembrance of the fallen, Chief of Army Staff Lt‑Gen Oluwafemi Oluyede has extended heartfelt condolences to their families and tasked army departments to liaise closely with the bereaved.
Integral to the operation were precision airstrikes conducted by the Nigerian Air Force on the bandits’ retreat routes—targets were hit rearward of the main engagement zones. While exact enemy losses remain unverified, visible blood trails and ongoing operations suggest significant casualties among the attackers.
Former military officials have criticized ongoing intelligence shortfalls that continue to handicap military preparedness, blaming poor surveillance and lack of local cooperation. They argue that strengthened intelligence gathering and deeper community engagement are vital to prevent future incursions into military camps and surrounding communities.
