Former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and suspended governor Siminalayi Fubara have publicly declared the end of their political feud following a high-level reconciliation meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on June 26 – 27 . Both leaders, along with lawmakers loyal to Wike, faced a six-month suspension after a declaration of emergency in the state by President Bola Tinubu earlier in March .
During the meeting, Wike emphasized that “peace has finally returned” to Rivers State, expressing optimism about moving forward together. He highlighted their shared political roots and acknowledged that while “humans have disagreements,” there also comes a time to resolve them. He affirmed, “We have all agreed on everything… there is no more acrimony” .
Governor Fubara echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of sustaining peace for the state’s progress. Describing the meeting as a “new beginning,” he lauded Tinubu’s intervention and confirmed his commitment, stating: “This night… peace has returned in Rivers State” .
The truce follows Tinubu’s announcement of a Rangers State emergency intervention after widespread pipeline vandalism and governance paralysis. With this accord, signs point to the possible early lifting of the emergency rule and the reinstatement of elected officials, with the state administration poised to resume under civilian leadership .
This accord marks a significant turning point for Rivers State, offering a hopeful reset after months of uncertainty and standoff.
