Former Kano State Governor and APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has officially resigned from his position as of June 27, 2025. Citing declining health, Ganduje stated his wish to prioritise personal well-being after nearly two years in office.
However, insiders revealed that a deeper political conflict underpinned his decision. Ganduje was reportedly displeased with the impending defection of his long‑time rival, Rabiu Kwankwaso—a former ally turned adversary in Kano politics. Sources indicate tensions peaked as Kwankwaso’s entry into APC gained traction, prompting Ganduje to threaten resignation before ultimately stepping down.
Within the party, there were frantic efforts by aides like National Secretary Ajibola Basiru and other principal officers to retain him, but Ganduje remained resolute, officially transmitting his letter of resignation around 4:15 p.m. on Friday.
Speculation continues over whether pressure from President Tinubu played a role. Some party insiders suggest Ganduje was encouraged to resign to pave the way for internal realignment—including possible ambassadorial appointment for him—while making space for emerging leaders.
In the aftermath, APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Dalori, has stepped in as Acting National Chairman, per the party’s constitution.
A joint statement from the APC governors’ forum framed the transition as part of the party’s evolution. Issued after their meeting in Edo State, they described Ganduje’s exit as a natural progression in pursuit of internal reforms and consolidation, reinforcing their commitment to cohesive governance.
