The House of Representatives has raised concerns over the N1.48 trillion 2024 budget passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara. During a recent plenary session, lawmakers questioned the substantial amount allocated to security, especially the N30 billion earmarked for the purchase of closed-circuit television (CCTV) equipment and gunboats.
The Committee on Public Accounts, led by Rep. Bamidele Salam, demanded detailed explanations from the state government on how the funds for security infrastructure would be utilized. The lawmakers emphasized the need for transparency, stressing that such large sums should come with accountability, especially when linked to security-related projects.
They further highlighted that in the face of rising insecurity, it is important to ensure that funds allocated for surveillance and protective equipment are appropriately spent. The investigation is part of broader efforts to ensure that public funds across all states are properly managed and justified.
