Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the recent Edo State governorship election, has strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s verdict affirming Governor Monday Okpebholo’s victory. While acknowledging the court’s authority, Ighodalo described the judgment as unjust and claimed the election was a “coordinated and deliberate robbery” that had now been legitimized by the judiciary.
In a statement released after the ruling, Ighodalo maintained that although he respects the finality of the Supreme Court’s decision, he stands by his belief that the outcome does not reflect the true will of the Edo people. He expressed concern that the state might suffer under what he termed an illegitimate administration and warned of potential setbacks in governance and public welfare.
Meanwhile, Governor Okpebholo welcomed the ruling, describing it as a divine affirmation of his electoral mandate. He pledged to run an inclusive government that prioritizes development and unity across the state. According to him, the court’s judgment marks a new beginning for Edo, one that promises progress for all residents.
President Bola Tinubu and several governors, including members of the Southern Governors’ Forum, congratulated Okpebholo on his legal victory. They commended the judiciary for upholding democratic values and urged the governor to use the opportunity to bring all stakeholders together for the good of the state.
The Supreme Court had dismissed Ighodalo’s appeal, ruling that he failed to prove substantial irregularities or non-compliance in the election process. The court also affirmed earlier decisions by the tribunal and appellate court, declaring that Okpebholo was duly elected by the people.
