Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The 82-year-old statesman reportedly passed away in a London clinic on Saturday, July 13, 2025, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
The announcement was made by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, who confirmed the sad news on behalf of the family. In his brief statement, Shehu said, “Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, a retired major general, first ruled Nigeria as military head of state between 1983 and 1985 before returning decades later to serve as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023. His leadership tenure was marked by efforts to tackle corruption, address insecurity, and revive the nation’s economy.
His death marks the end of an era for a man who left a profound mark on Nigeria’s political history, being the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in a democratic election.
