The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone B, has voiced strong concerns over the worsening condition of federal roads in the South-West region, describing them as death traps. In a communique issued after a recent meeting in Ibadan, the union called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the deplorable state of key roads, including the Ilesa-Ibadan expressway, Akure-Ado-Ekiti road, and Ibadan-Odeda-Abeokuta road.
The union noted that these roads have become increasingly hazardous for commuters due to large potholes, erosion, and general neglect, which have caused numerous accidents and damaged vehicles. The NUJ emphasized that the decay of road infrastructure is not only threatening lives but also disrupting economic activities and travel within the region.
In addition to the poor road conditions, the union expressed disappointment over the decline of government-owned media houses in the zone, many of which are facing neglect and underfunding. The NUJ urged both federal and state governments to pay more attention to public institutions and ensure they are properly equipped to serve the public interest.
Furthermore, the NUJ appealed to the federal government to engage in meaningful dialogue with labour unions and quickly resolve the issue of a new national minimum wage. The union stressed the need for economic policies that alleviate hardship and promote the welfare of Nigerian citizens.
