President Bola Tinubu has approved the sum of ₦142.028 billion for the construction of modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The approval was granted during the Federal Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, signalling a major federal intervention in the nation’s transport infrastructure beyond road construction.Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, announced that the project will be executed by Planet Project Limited, with each zone getting a state-of-the-art terminal.
The selected locations include Abeokuta in the South-West, Gombe in the North-East, Kano in the North-West, Lokoja in the North-Central, Onitsha in the South-East, and Ewu in Edo State for the South-South.Senator Alkali explained that the absence of organised bus terminals in the country has contributed to insecurity, traffic accidents, and other criminal activities along major highways. He noted that the new facilities will enhance commuter experience, improve road safety, and stimulate local economies by creating new business opportunities.
The minister added that the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to modernising transportation, boosting economic activities, and improving public safety nationwide.
