The Lagos State Police Command has begun an investigation into the death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, a former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State. His sudden passing on September 10 has sparked widespread controversy following the circulation of a disturbing image showing injuries to his head.
Initial reports suggested that Akingboye died peacefully at home, but the graphic photo raised suspicions and prompted calls for a deeper probe. Matters were further complicated after claims surfaced that over ₦210 million was withdrawn from his bank account just hours after his death, with most of the funds allegedly transferred into three separate accounts.
Family members have also hinted that Akingboye may have sustained fatal injuries during a heated argument at his residence. According to them, the disagreement escalated, leading to him being pushed and hitting his head on a tiled floor before he was rushed to a hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.
While unconfirmed reports suggest that some arrests have been made, the Lagos State Police Command has yet to release official details. The situation continues to fuel speculation, with many demanding clarity on what truly led to his demise.
Akingboye, known for his philanthropy and political involvement, contested the Ondo governorship election in November 2024 under the SDP but lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. His death has left both political associates and community members in shock, with growing calls for justice and transparency.
