Four individuals have been formally arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja in connection with the murder of Remi Abass, the former Chairman of the Irewole Local Government in Osun State. The defendants — Abubakar Kabiru (aka “Jeje,” 38), Tajudeen Opeyemi (30), Akeem Agbomojo (28), and Akintoye Olayemi (40) — all hailing from Ikire and Apomu in Osun State, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
They face a three-count charge sheet that includes conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism, illegal possession of firearms, and the murder of Hon. Abass. The prosecution alleges that the suspects collaborated to orchestrate violent acts in multiple localities across Osun State, and were found in possession of three pump-action rifles during their arrest.
Following their plea, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ordered the accused to be remanded in Kuje Custodial Centre and adjourned the matter to December 4, 2025, for the commencement of trial.
Investigations suggest that the killing is tied to escalating political rivalry between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State. The tension intensified after the Court of Appeal reinstated APC-elected council officials, triggering hostilities and violent confrontations in several local government areas.
Earlier, the prosecution had indicted seven suspects, led by one Jide Jooda, but later withdrew the case following the death of one of the accused while awaiting trial.
