The country’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru, has intervened in the escalating clash between the Nigerian Navy and the Nyesom Wike-led FCT administration over a land in Abuja. The disputed parcel, reportedly once belonging to former Chief of Naval Staff Awwal Gambo, has become the focal point of a public stand-off.
At a press briefing in Abuja held on Wednesday, the minister made clear that the Ministry of Defence and the armed forces leadership are committed to protecting any officer carrying out lawful duties. He emphasized that no soldier engaged legitimately in duty will be left vulnerable.
In his statement, Badaru reiterated: “We will always protect our officers on lawful duty… So far as he is doing his job, and he is doing his job greatly well, we will not allow anything to happen to him.”
The minister also noted that the matter is under review, underlining that the defence establishment is watching the situation closely to ensure due process is followed and the rights of the military personnel involved are upheld.
