The European Union, in partnership with Search for Common Ground, has introduced a new initiative aimed at reducing insecurity across Nigeria’s North-West region. The project, known as The Hustle Reality Show (Buge Buge), is designed to empower young people in Katsina, Zamfara and Sokoto through entrepreneurship, mentorship, and peacebuilding activities. The programme, which will run for 24 months, seeks to equip participants with practical business skills while promoting collaboration and conflict-resolution values among youth.
According to the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, the initiative is rooted in the belief that young people play a critical role in creating safer and more resilient communities. He noted that empowering youth with opportunity, innovation and skills is key to addressing the root causes of violence and instability in the region. The organisers emphasised that the reality show is not merely for entertainment but is structured as a tool for social change that will highlight how tolerance and teamwork can bridge divides.
The Managing Director of Search for Common Ground, West Africa, revealed that a recent youth-led research found that 92% of young people believe they can contribute significantly to peacebuilding and economic growth. This insight, he said, inspired the development of a platform where youths can showcase their talents, engage in business challenges, and participate in activities designed to strengthen peace within their communities.
The initiative comes at a time when the North-West is battling rampant banditry, kidnappings, and communal conflicts driven largely by unemployment, poverty and lack of opportunities. By focusing on youth empowerment and behavioural change, the EU-backed programme aims to address these underlying issues and support long-term stability in one of Nigeria’s most volatile regions.
