Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) has dismissed a surgeon following the findings of a state-appointed panel that confirmed the unauthorised removal of a patient’s kidney during a surgical procedure.
The decision to sack the medical practitioner was announced by the Ekiti State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, after an investigative committee led by Professor Francis Faduyile reviewed the case. The panel was set up to probe allegations raised by a patient who claimed that one of his kidneys was taken without his consent during treatment at the hospital.
According to the government’s statement, the surgeon who led the operation has been immediately removed from service, while other members of the surgical team present on the day of the procedure have been suspended for one month pending further administrative review.
In an effort to support the affected victim, the Ekiti State Government has pledged to cover the full cost of a kidney transplant as well as the patient’s post-operative care and medication for two years. Additionally, a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments at EKSUTH will be carried out to improve clinical governance and strengthen patient safety standards.
The dismissal has sparked reactions online, with some Nigerians calling for further legal action and greater transparency around the incident. The identity of the dismissed doctor has not been publicly released, and hospital officials have not issued a further comment on the matter.
