The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have finally sealed a new agreement that brings significant relief to public university lecturers across the country. The deal, reached after extensive negotiations, includes the approval of a 40 per cent salary increase aimed at improving the welfare of academic staff and stabilising Nigeria’s university system.According to details of the agreement, the pay rise will take effect from January 2026 and will be implemented through a reviewed salary structure for university academics.
The new arrangement is expected to address long-standing complaints about poor remuneration, rising living costs and the need to retain skilled lecturers within the country’s higher education sector.In addition to the salary adjustment, the agreement also covers improved allowances meant to support teaching, research and academic development.
These provisions are designed to help lecturers meet the growing demands of research work, publications, conferences and other professional responsibilities essential to global academic standards.ASUU leaders have described the agreement as a positive step, while noting that broader issues affecting university funding and autonomy will continue to be discussed.
