In a remarkable and somber development in Kano State, the father of Umar Auwal — the main suspect in the brutal killing of a woman and her six children — has called on authorities to move swiftly to see his son face the ultimate punishment. Speaking on a local radio programme, Mallam Auwal publicly distanced himself from his son, describing him as “useless to society” and insisting that keeping him alive in prison would be a waste of public resources.
Umar Auwal, currently in police custody, is accused of storming a home in the Dorayi Chiranchi area and murdering his aunt, Fatima Abubakar, 35, along with her six children — ranging from teenagers to a toddler. The suspect is also said to have confessed to involvement in a separate attack in Tudun Yola, where two other women were killed and a residence set on fire.
In his radio interview, Mallam Auwal condemned his son’s alleged actions, alleging past violent behaviour and urging that justice be delivered without delay. He went as far as to urge that Umar be executed rather than remanded, arguing that individuals like him should be removed entirely from society. The grieving father also stated that neither he nor Umar’s mother plans to attend any court proceedings.
The case has drawn national attention. President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killings and ordered thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible. Meanwhile, the Kano State government has taken over the prosecution of the suspects to ensure the legal process is handled efficiently.
The tragic incident has provoked widespread public outrage and renewed calls for decisive action against violent crime in the region.
