The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has achieved a historic milestone with its Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) successfully operating at its full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. The achievement positions the refinery as one of the largest single-train facilities in the world to attain such processing volume, marking a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s energy sector.The development follows the successful optimisation and stabilisation of key operational units within the refinery, including the petrol production block.
After undergoing routine checks and performance enhancements, the facility has now demonstrated its ability to run efficiently at maximum capacity, reflecting the strength of its engineering design and operational systems.Management of the refinery described the milestone as a testament to advanced technology, strong technical partnerships, and the commitment of its workforce.
A comprehensive performance test was also conducted to ensure the facility meets global operational and safety standards while running at full capacity.With the refinery now operating at peak output, expectations are high that it will significantly increase the supply of refined petroleum products, particularly Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), to the Nigerian market.
The boost in production is projected to enhance fuel availability, reduce dependence on imports, conserve foreign exchange, and strengthen the country’s energy security.Industry stakeholders believe the full-capacity operation of Africa’s largest refinery could have far-reaching economic benefits, including stabilising fuel prices, supporting local industries, and reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a key player in the global oil and gas sector.
