In Abuja’s Gwarinpa area, a 16-year-old domestic worker was rescued after her employer allegedly poured scalding hot water over her, prompting neighbours to rush her to a hospital and alert authorities. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) confirmed the rescue, stating that the tip from concerned neighbours triggered its swift intervention.
The young girl, who hails from Imo State and is one of twelve siblings, had been employed to care for three children—two infants and a seven-year-old—while her employer was away at night. Reports say she sustained burns when subjected to hot water by the employer. The neighbours, upon witnessing the abuse, quickly intervened and transported her to medical care before contacting NAPTIP for further action.
NAPTIP has launched a formal investigation, pledging that all parties implicated in this “heinous act” will be held accountable under the law. This case echoes other harrowing incidents across Nigeria involving domestic violence and the use of hot water as a weapon of abuse.
