The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, convened a meeting on Thursday with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Ondo State to address issues related to education and student welfare.
This meeting came in response to a protest organized by the Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of NANS in Akure, where students voiced their concerns regarding the conditions of some of their educational institutions.
During the meeting at the Governor’s Office later that day, Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that many of the requests from the students were already being acted upon by his administration.
The Governor praised the peaceful approach taken by the students during their protest, affirming that his administration has implemented various initiatives to enhance education, including increasing funding for tertiary institutions and providing bursaries and scholarships.
While instructing the Ministry of Infrastructure to commence the rehabilitation of internal roads at the institutions, the Governor indicated that designs had already been completed for certain roads leading to schools, such as Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also mentioned that relevant intervention agencies had been contacted to expedite the completion of stalled hostel projects in some schools.
Additionally, the Governor directed the management of the former Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo to start preparations for the convocation of graduates from the last ten sessions.
Regarding security issues, the Governor stated that relative peace has returned to the state, as security agencies are now collaborating more effectively to ensure the safety of citizens and property.
The Governor also covered topics such as the renovation of the NYSC camp in Ikare Akoko, the land disputes at the Federal College of Agriculture in Akure, and the provision of buses for Student Union Governments.
The student leaders expressed their gratitude to the Governor for the meeting and for the commitments made to address their concerns.
Present at the meeting were the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr. Kelvin Solomon Olaolu, and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Empowerment, Mr. Orioye Benedict Gbayisemore.
