The protesting students, led by Oluwarotimi Joshua, the chairman of NANS South West, carried placards with various messages as they blocked major roads in Akure, the state capital. They caused traffic disruptions while urging the state government and security agencies to genuinely address the numerous security issues in the area. The students accused the state government of ignoring their safety concerns and demanded immediate action to tackle the escalating situation.
They criticized the governor for merely paying lip service to the protection of lives and property in the region.
The students expressed their disappointment over the government’s neglect in addressing their concerns, despite several discussions and peaceful negotiations.
The protesters also pointed out the declining conditions of higher education institutions in the state, the absence of student-friendly policies, and the threats to security impacting students, especially those participating in the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme.
Efforts by state police commissioner Wilfred Afolabi to disperse the demonstrators and clear the blocked roads were met with opposition from the students.
