The Rivers State Government has officially requested a reimbursement of ₦300 million from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) after the association decided to move its 2025 Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt to Enugu. The request was made in a statement released on Monday by the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), through his spokesperson, Hector Igbikiowubo. The government expressed disappointment regarding the NBA’s rationale for the relocation, deeming the explanations both deceptive and unjust. While the state recognized the NBA's right to select any venue for its events, it questioned why no action had been taken to return the funds paid under the initial hosting agreement. The statement urged the association to demonstrate integrity and refund the money if it genuinely adheres to the principles it advocates. The NBA announced on April 10, 2025, that it would be moving the conference to Enugu, citing supposed threats to democratic governance in Rivers State. The association pointed to recent political developments under the current administration, claiming they endangered the rule of law. In its reply, the Rivers State Government defended the recent political moves, including the state of emergency and the appointment of a Sole Administrator, asserting that these were lawful and necessary actions to stabilize the area. The statement highlighted that President Bola Tinubu acted within the constitutional powers granted to him. Vice Admiral Ibas pointed out that his role is transitional and focused on reinstating normal democratic processes in the state. He also referenced a Supreme Court ruling—Suit No. SC/CV/1176/2024—which upheld decisions made during this interim period, including the annulment of certain local government elections that violated the Electoral Act. The state government accused the NBA of politicizing the issue and urged the association to approach the matter with greater objectivity and a willingness to positively contribute to the ongoing efforts to restore comprehensive democratic governance. “Rivers State is experiencing a crucial transitional period,” the statement concluded. “We invite the NBA and other stakeholders to support the initiatives being implemented to achieve peace, order, and progress.”
