The Federal Government has announced a substantial investment of N80 billion aimed at renovating and upgrading over 100 Unity Colleges across Nigeria. This initiative was unveiled by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, during an unannounced inspection of Federal Government College (FGC) Kano and Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Kazaure.
During her visits, Professor Ahmad engaged directly with school administrators, teachers, and students to assess the current state of infrastructure, teaching quality, and student welfare. She emphasized that these inspections are part of a broader strategy to align educational policies with on-the-ground realities, ensuring that interventions are both targeted and effective.
The minister highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education by providing modern and conducive learning environments. She also announced the development of a national digital platform for teacher training, designed to offer educators across the country access to contemporary instructional resources and professional development opportunities.
Professor Ahmad stressed the importance of maintaining appropriate student-teacher ratios, conducting regular quality assurance assessments, and promoting inclusive education. She noted that Conditional Cash Transfers (CCTs) remain a vital tool in supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds, improving access to education, and reducing dropout rates.
At FGC Kano, the minister was welcomed by Principal Mrs. Hafsat Adebayo, who expressed gratitude for the visit. Professor Ahmad addressed the students, urging them to pursue academic excellence and uphold values such as discipline, honesty, and integrity.
The inspection continued at FGGC Kazaure, where the minister assessed facilities including classrooms, laboratories, and the ICT center. She expressed concern over the lack of internet connectivity in the ICT center and assured the school management that such challenges would be prioritized.
Professor Ahmad concluded that the inspection tour represents a proactive shift in the Ministry’s approach to governance, rooted in transparency, accountability, and stakeholder collaboration. She affirmed the Federal Ministry of Education’s resolve to transform Unity Schools into centers of excellence capable of nurturing future generations and advancing national development.
