The Labour Party (LP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to transform Nigeria into a one-party state in preparation for the 2027 general elections. According to LP’s Director-General of Mobilization and Integration, Marcel Ngogbehei, the APC is allegedly compromising major opposition parties in the North and East, aiming to position President Bola Tinubu as the consensus candidate across all parties.
Ngogbehei claims that the APC is instigating internal crises within opposition parties to weaken them, thereby facilitating defections of their members to the ruling party. He also pointed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Transition Committee as a potential vehicle for the APC to infiltrate and destabilize the Labour Party.
The LP warns that these actions by the APC pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s democratic framework, potentially leading to the erosion of political pluralism and the establishment of a de facto one-party system.
