Tragic Mistake in Awka: 10‑Year‑Old Son Accidentally Shoots and Kills Police Inspector Father


Awka, Anambra State (June 17, 2025) – In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 10‑year‑old boy accidentally shot his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, dead on the evening of June 15 at their family home in Awka, according to Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga .

Inspector Amechi, who was off duty at the time, reportedly left his AK‑47 rifle unsecured in the residence. Unaware that the weapon was loaded, his young son handled it and unintentionally pulled the trigger. The bullet struck Inspector Amechi in the back and wounded his younger sibling in the hand .

The police spokesperson confirmed that Inspector Amechi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, while the injured child is undergoing treatment and reportedly responding well .

“The Anambra State Police Command deeply regrets this unfortunate incident,” the statement read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wish a speedy recovery to the injured child. Further developments will be communicated accordingly.”
