The Federal Government is set to begin lobbying the National Assembly to fast-track the passage of the Road Fund Bill. This initiative, aimed at securing a sustainable funding mechanism for road maintenance across the country, is a critical component of the Tinubu administration’s broader infrastructure agenda.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed the plan during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, emphasizing that the bill will enable the creation of a dedicated fund, independent of the annual budget cycle, to ensure constant road rehabilitation and development. According to Umahi, the proposed law is essential to ending the recurring issue of poorly maintained roads due to inconsistent financing.
The minister stressed that the Road Fund Bill, once passed, will create a pool of resources sourced from road users and other stakeholders, ensuring continuous road upkeep. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with the National Assembly to bring the bill to fruition and called on transport unions, road users, and civil society to lend their support.
Industry stakeholders at the meeting expressed optimism that the Road Fund will bring about lasting solutions to Nigeria’s deteriorating road infrastructure. The government’s lobbying effort marks a significant push to institutionalize road funding and reduce dependency on unstable public financing.
