Retired police officers across Nigeria have expressed deep frustration over what they described as “miserable and humiliating” pension payments. The ex-officers, who served the country for decades, say they are now forced to live in hardship due to the neglect of their welfare by successive governments.
The aggrieved retirees revealed that many of them are being paid as little as ₦14,000 monthly, an amount they say is insufficient to afford food, medication, or shelter in today’s economy. They criticized the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), calling it a betrayal of their service and a source of continued suffering in retirement.
Under the aegis of the Concerned Retired Police Officers (CROP), the retirees are urging the Federal Government to urgently remove the Nigeria Police Force from the CPS and return them to the more favorable Defined Benefits Scheme (DBS). They argued that their counterparts in the military, who have already exited the CPS, enjoy far better post-retirement treatment.
During their protest, the retired officers carried placards and chanted songs of discontent, vowing not to back down until their demands are met. They appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu to heed their cry, restructure their pension system, and give them the dignity they deserve after years of dedicated service to the nation.
